The men’s volleyball team will be playing their first match tonight, beginning their regular season. After three weeks of practice and scrimmage, the first match is a trimatch. CHS will play against Roncalli and Chesterton High School and CHS tonight.
Assistant Head Coach Steven VanHoorde said that he hopes the team gets into a good rhythm tonight and said that he is confident in his team.
Steven VanHoorde, Assistant Head Coach and CHS graduate, said, “(The) big matchups tonight are Chesterton, who won State last year, and Roncalli.”
VanHoorde, a CHS graduate and former CHS men’s volleyball player said that it’s exciting to be on the coaching side of the team. He said that it’s cool to see his team play the same teams and rivals he played when going to CHS.
“(As a coach) it’s really cool. I think it’s similar to my (high school) experience in a way, with the same competitiveness, passion to want to be successful against those big teams and big rivals that I played back in high school. To sort of pass it onto my players is exciting still every time,” VanHoorde said.
According to junior Joel Kellum, he is excited for the season to start and is excited to play some of the local teams.
Kellum elaborated saying, “This Friday we play Roncalli and Chesterton High School. They are definitely two of the top teams in the State. We’re also excited to play Cathedral and Noblesville. There are a lot of decent teams around here. Noblesville is good, Brebuf has some good players, Lawrence North, but it’s going to be a fun season just because during club season, I played with some guys from other schools. I’ve gotten to know them and it’s fun to play against them during club season.”
Kellum concurred with VanHoorde saying he hopes that the team can get in a good rhythm tonight.
“I’m hoping that we can get to a rhythm early in the season so we can kind of get used to each other because we do have some new players on the varsity court and it’s changed from last year. I think definitely early on in the season we need to just start having some consistency.” Kellum said, “I’m also pretty confident that we’ll do well on Friday against these teams. It’s going to be a fun match with a really fun environment.”
