Do Something Club will meet on Oct. 31 after school to plan the club’s annual Fleece Blankets for the Homeless event. According to club sponsor James Ziegler, this project will be the primary focus for the club throughout the month of November, and will take place on Nov. 14 after school in the main cafeteria.
“It will be a school-wide event to make fleece blankets for the homeless in Indianapolis,” Ziegler said. “Our goal is to make at least 50 fleece blankets which will be distributed to the homeless over the Thanksgiving holiday. For the event, students will need to bring a pair of good scissors and two 2 yard by 2 yard pieces of fleece.”
Member and junior Samantha Kadinger said the club will get the word out about the event by making in-studio announcements and producing flyers to distribute to the student body. Kadinger and Ziegler also said they hope to get other clubs involved with the event as well.
“We will be contacting other clubs including Key Club, Helping Hands and AVID to see if they would like to partner with us for this event,” Ziegler said. “Our goal is to broaden it beyond just our club and try to get some other clubs involved so we can make as many blankets as possible because winter will be right around the corner.”
Following the Fleece Blankets for the Homeless event, which will conclude the afternoon the blankets are made, Do Something Club will raise money for a primary school on the island of Saint Croix that was destroyed as a result of Hurricane Maria.
“We’re specifically raising money for the islands outside of the United States, because it’s harder for them to receive supplies and get help since they’re in the ocean,” Kadinger said. “A lot of these towns have been completely destroyed, and our club is really hoping to help with any money we can raise.”
According to Ziegler, the club will hold a movie night fundraiser on Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. in Room E224, and all the money raised will go towards providing relief to those affected by the hurricane in the Caribbean.
“I hope we make more blankets than last year, and help to make a difference for the victims of the hurricane,” Kadinger said. “The purpose is to help the people who need it the most, whether it’s the homeless or the victims of natural disasters.”
