The Carmel men’s tennis team captured the 2011 IHSAA Tennis State Championship on Saturday at North Central, achieving their goal to repeat as State Champions after last year’s victory. Victories over Park Tudor in the semifinals and North Central in the finals capped the Greyhound’s undefeated season.
The Greyhounds got their toughest test of the season against Park Tudor in the semifinals, where they escaped by a score of 3-2. In the finals though, the team had little trouble handling North Central, as they won 5-0.
“We really had a gut check today and the boys stepped up in the final and got it done,” Head Coach Mike Bostic said. “I am so proud of how we kept our composure against Park Tudor. Afterwards, we had to re-group and focus on what we set out to do at the beginning of the year, win a state team title.”
At number one singles, Mihir Kumar defeated Reily Reist 6-1, 6-3. Kumar finished the season with only one loss.
Kumar’s little brother, freshman Sameer Kumar, defeated Andrew Stutz 6-2, 6-2 to put the finishing touches on his undefeated season.
In three singles, Chris Quammen defeated Ari Gerstein 6-4, 6-2.
After suffering a tough three-set loss in against Park Tudor, the one doubles team of Elliott Yee and Connor Dunn rebounded to defeat Luke Lohstorfer and Jake Minner 6-1, 6-0.
The two doubles team was strong all day, and they clinched the championship for the team with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Patrick McAuley and Will Reifeis.
