The main focus of Economics Club currently is preparation for the April competition.
Ray Qian, a two-year-member and senior, said via-email, “Last year, we lost at the state level, and I feel the need to redeem myself.”
Economics Club members are strong students in science and math, according to Michelle Foutz, economics teacher and sponsor of the club. They prepare by looking up current events about trade, banking, housing market and unemployment, Foutz said, which they share with the rest of the members at their next meeting. Foutz said she also gives them practice tests.
The competition is single elimination so, if the team is eliminated on one level, it is out for the rest of the competitions.
The Economics Club has won three championships in the past, according the Foutz. The club’s main rivals are Phillips Academy from Connecticut and Iolani, a private school from Hawaii, Foutz said, because each have won the championship multiple times.
According to Foutz, “To win a national championship, that’s the goal.”
