During the first session of SRT on Nov. 22, the student body will gather in the varsity gym for the fall recognition convocation. According to principal John Williams, the school will honor the fall sports State champions as well as the marching band for its third place finish in the Bands of America competition.
“Our philosophy behind this event is to celebrate as a school and make announcements,” Williams said. “I think it’s important for us to get together and acknowledge some of our group accomplishments.”
Williams said the school will also recognize the football team if it advances to the State championship game on Nov. 26 as well as other groups with noteworthy achievements.
Student body president Terrance Lewis, who will announce the names at the convocation, said he looks forward to this event as an opportunity to rally the students.
Lewis said, “I can tell this school is really proud of all we’ve accomplished so far. This is going to be one of the loudest and most energetic convos we’ve had in recent years.”

But in addition to all-school convocations, Williams said he plans to host a more private ceremony in the spring to honor individuals or small groups. Unlike the one that will take place on Nov. 22, this event will occur in the media center and will not require the attendance of the entire student body.
“We have just individuals or groups of two people that wouldn’t fit into what we’re doing as a school. (The all-school convocation) is more team-oriented, so I can see us doing something every year for those individuals. It could be any number of things,” Williams said.
Possible honorees include students with perfects scores on standardized tests or students noted for volunteer work.
Lewis said he considers this a great idea.
“Athletics isn’t the only thing that Carmel is known for,” Lewis said, “It’s important to recognize everyone, those who excel athletically and academically.”
