On Sept. 21, CHS drumline members gathered in the commons area during each passing period for the BucketBangers event, where the drumline participants played out rhythms on buckets. Max Enzmann and Shane McGrath, drumline members and seniors, organized the event.
“It’s (organized through) word of mouth and there’s also an email that says, ‘Hey, talk to your teachers, see if it’s okay to leave five minutes early or come five minutes late,’ Enzmann said. “Then basically it’s all spur of the moment: go up to the library, grab our stuff and go out and jam.”
According to McGrath, drumline members used improvisation to play the rhythms.
“It’s really just spontaneous,” he said.
Joey Miller, drumline member and sophomore, elaborated on McGrath’s statement.
“It’s all just improv, but we’re experienced with drumming because we’re on the drumline,” he said. “You’ve just got to be cool with everything. It takes patience and calmness.”
Michael Wimer, drumline member and junior, also participated in the BucketBangers event.
“It’s kind of like an unreal experience, just being in front of all the kids at the high school, having them cheer you on, having the administrators and (Principal) John Williams coming out to support you,” he said.
According to Williams, the performance was exceptional.
“It’s just fantastic,” he said. “Drumline is such a big part of our Carmel Homecoming tradition and it sets a tone for the day. Kids love it: they come and they listen, they see the talent that our kids have and the enthusiasm that they have and I just really enjoy it.”
Wimer agreed.
“It really makes Homecoming a lot of fun for the whole school,” he said. “It’s amazing what can happen in the spur of the moment.”
