The Debate Club plans to have two competitions in October located at West Lafayette and Brebeuf Jesuit, according to its new sponsor Nicole Palmer.
“I thought that (Debate Club) would be a great way to get involved in something. I want to get involved with a smaller group,” Palmer said.
Last year’s sponsor James Ziegler stopped being the sponsor because of time constraints. “I think it’s an awesome organization, but my time’s too spread out,” Ziegler said.
The job for any member of debate club at a competition is to earn National Forensics League (NFL) points. The NFL points allow students to rank up in the debate ladder. The students usually compete in three to four debates per tournament, earning three NFL points for a victory and one NFL point for a loss.
Also, debate is very helpful in other aspects besides speaking according to Ziegler. “Anybody who wants to go into a legal business should go. It’s a great group of kids and it’ll help in terms of a writing background,” Ziegler said
