The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) will host its annual Bike Safety Course at the Indiana University Health Center on Oct. 13, according to club vice president Taylor Farmer. The objective of the course is to teach children about bike safety and how to obey street signs. This is part of the FCCLA’s national goal of family safety, club sponsor Nancy Spencer added.
Along with community service, the FCCLA is also heavily involved with local and national fundraising. According to Farmer, the two biggest fundraisers the organization participates in are March of Dimes, which aims to raise money for children with birth defects and Share Our Strength, which combats child hunger. The club will host a bake sale later in the year to raise money for that cause.
“Last year we raised $250, so obviously we hope to beat that this year,” said Farmer. The club meets every other Wednesday to plan these events, according to Farmer.
Farmer said one of the long term goals of the FCCLA is to send as many of its members to state competitions as possible. The competitions include Family and Consumer Sciences Knowledge Bowl, Skill Demonstration Events and STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events, according to the FCCLA national website.
“There are tons of varieties of events, like cooking and creating a fake business, that are all centered on the Family Consumer Science Department,” Farmer said. “We’re preparing earlier this year because it takes quite a while to prepare. Our goal is for everyone to get gold and go on to nationals.”
The FCCLA currently has 36 members, but Farmer is expecting that number to grow. According to Farmer, the national 30-by-30 program is designed to raise the membership of each local chapter by 30 members in 30 days, followed by the 50-by-50 program, which is the same concept. “We’re on track to do both,” said Farmer.
Spencer added, “One of our major goals is to raise membership and awareness of who we are.”
