The Africa Awareness Club (formerly Invisible Children) will begin scheduling for events throughout the school year at its meeting on Oct. 23. “We will be mapping out what we’re going to be doing,” club sponsor Tracy Hadden said.
According to Megan Riley, club president and junior, nothing is really set in stone yet. She said the club will be hosting a variety of events during the school year.
According to Hadden, the club will have regular meetings on gold Tuesdays and will host a presentation on Nov. 5 for the Invisible Children organization. Hadden said the presentation will include the screening of a movie and a guest speaker. She said they will also conduct workshops in AP Human Geography and international relations classes.
Hadden said Africa Awareness will attempt to encourage students to attend the Nov. 5 screening. “This is particularly relevant for juniors at Carmel High School who have read Long Way Gone, about child soldiers,” she said. The books are required reading for many English 11 classes. The Africa Awareness Club hopes to use these events to continue to raise awareness of the use of child soldiers.
