Early on Dec. 17, superintendent Jeff Swensson sent a letter lamenting the events of the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown, CT. Principal John Williams added in an email that counseling services are always available for students who seem “particularly upset” or need to talk.
Swensson wrote, “While we are not in a position to provide help directly for those who have lost so much, and for those who must carry on, we are able to honor the memory of the victims, while we express the bond that we share with our Sandy Hook brethren, by doing several things in the days and weeks ahead.”
Swensson advised that teachers and administrators approach the remaining school days before winter break as usual to provide the comfort of a “normal routine” and a continued focus on security. He also encouraged dialogue with and between students, helping one another and seeking attention from counselors if necessary.
