Orchestra’s next concert will be a chamber music concert on Feb. 6 at 5:30 in room P100, according Kyle Mahoney, member of the Philharmonic Orchestra and sophomore. Admission for the concert is free. He said it will be a longer concert than usual because the groups, the chamber ensembles, are smaller and so more groups will perform. He said the chamber ensembles will play chamber music, meaning the pieces will be more focused on individual parts of the pieces.
Mahoney said he is in a quartet with Marya Meroueh, Becca Roberts and Morgan Kavalec.
Soo Han, performing arts co-department chairperson and director for orchestras said that the students will work in these groups for the first third of the second semester and that the groups range from three to twelve students.
Han said, “It is important for students to learn to play in a small setting.” He said in the smaller setting students are each responsible for a specific part in a group.
For chamber ensembles, Mahoney said, “(You need) group skills to work together and solve problems (within the group.)” He said the ensembles force you to focus more on musical rhythms and fitting parts together in musical pieces.
