As spring break quickly approaches, the nurses at this school are currently informing students about the increase of the common cold among the students. According to nurse coordinator Patty Antle, remembering to do the simplest things, like washing hands, can make a significant difference in the health and well-being of themselves and others.
Antle said, “During this time of year, colds seem to be affecting students the most. Just the basic hand washing, sleeping well, eating right and taking care of themselves are simple ways students may prevent themselves from getting it.”
Student assistants have been of great assistance in the health center, according to Antle. Their help with daily tasks, such as running passes, doing laundry and making ice packs is important to maintaining the health center.
Antle said, “The student assistants help us a lot with the little things we need them to do for us. Even though their jobs may seem trivial, it really pays off for the health center in the end. For the majority of the period, though, the student assistants just do their homework after helping us.”
Senior Rachel Weiss is one of these student assistants. According to Weiss, the health center is very peaceful and calm.
Weiss said, “I like how relaxed and chill this class is. Usually, the nurses don’t have much for us to do in the morning. Also, if you have a lot of homework from last night, you can always get it done here. The nurses are always really nice about it, too.”
In addition to the benefit of having an extra study hall, according to Weiss, she enjoys this class for another reason.
Weiss said, “With everything the nurses do for all the students, it’s really nice to get an opportunity to return the favor and help them out.”
