The school board will meet on April 22 to vote and discuss policies as well as present awards to numerous recipients in the district. According to school board president Layla Spanenberg, some of the policies will affect students directly.
Spanenberg said, “One of the policies we are addressing for high school students is about the conditions for retaking a class. Some students might get a B and want to retake it for a better grade to maintain a high GPA, while others need to retake it to pass. This policy gives an overview on what classes you can retake, but discretion is up to the superintendent.”
Spanenberg said this policy gives discretion to the superintendent and attempts to answer the conditions under which students can retake a class. This is a new proposed policy for the district, and the board had its first reading of the policy at its last meeting.
Senior Catelyn Carpenter, who has retaken a class, said she doesn’t agree with the policy.
“I think students should be able to retake classes in a lot of circumstances. They could have had a personal problem that made that semester really difficult. And sometimes you need to learn the material more than once for it to stay with you, even if you are a good student,” Carpenter said.
Another policy, Policy 54.63, also impacts high school students. Spanenberg said the policy is about course credits for students who transfer to CHS from schools that aren’t accredited by the state, such as home-schools or some private schools.
“We need to assign a grade to courses now. This helps us with the process of assigning credit and placement into our school and classes,” Spanenberg said. “Even if the new student has an A on his transcript, that A doesn’t carry much weight if we don’t understand what composes it. We need to understand what that grade represents.”
In addition to voting on policies that affect students, Spanenberg said numerous groups from the high school will be recognized for winning awards.
“We’re having presentations for the basketball team after it won State, for the art awards, for math bowl and for the radio station. We have a lot of teachers being recognized, like (math teacher) Jan Mitchener,” Spanenberg said.
Carpenter, a member of CHTV, said, “I’m excited that the radio station is getting mentioned since it’s part of our department. I think the school board should absolutely honor different groups because their success helps the district.”
Board members also hope to make an announcement about the superintendent search.
Spanenberg said, “Right now, we’re continuing to get more materials on the candidates. We’d like to make an announcement at this meeting, but we just don’t know yet.”
