Philosophy Club will meet after school on Oct. 31 in Room A331. Members should be prepared to discuss Pre-Socratic philosophy, its history, and their own interpretation of it. Snacks, such as chocolate chip cookies, will be provided as usual. Meetings are still scheduled for every Blue Thursday.
Olga Bezpaltchikova, Philosophy Club president and senior, and co-president and junior Jacob Worrell were among very few members at the meeting on Oct. 10. According to Philosophy Club sponsor Peter Beck, the club has been facing conflicts with Key Club meetings.
Philosophy Club consists of informal classroom discussions on a wide variety of topics, from Ayn Rand to Eastern philosophical thinking. Rather than speaking for a certain topic, as people do in speech classes, students speak about a certain topic.
“I want to make sure everyone can express their opinion in a safe environment,” Beck said. “The very first year, it got very political.”
In addition to discussing different topics, the club also tries to find answers to some of life’s unanswerable questions.
Worrell said, “I’ve always had an interest in philosophical thinking questions because I find them intriguing. I think that they’re important even though we don’t know the answer to them.”
According to Bezpaltchikova, the club is not only for people that like to talk, but also for people that like to think. The club gives members a new way of looking at certain topics and allows them to collaborate with others to shape these opinions.
She said, “It (Philosophy Club) lets you expand upon your ideas, promotes high level thinking, enhances you as a person and makes you a good citizen of the United States of America.”
