With still over three months to go until the team’s first competitive match, ComedySportz club is building up its new members.
According to Kinsey Erickson, first-year ComedySportz member and junior, everything is settling into place.
“For a while at the beginning it was really intimidating because it was still, ‘These are the pros and I know basically nothing about ComedySportz,'” she said. “Now that we’re learning, we have more jokes and it’s a lot more comfortable, so it’s a lot more of a friendly environment.”
ComedySportz sponsor Jim Peterson said the new members progression has been visible.
“The noobs are good, they’re pretty impressive on a lot of their individual talents,” he said. “Getting comfortable with the matches really is the big thing now.”
Erickson said her new familiarity with other team members helped her own development in ComedySportz.
“I never really interacted with the pros before, but now when I see them in the hallways, they’re always really nice and helpful,” Erickson said.
According to Peterson, the team has ample time to work on any improvements.
“We’re still training all through November and then a little bit in December, but that gets crazy with the Holiday (Spectacular) and finals,” Peterson said. “That’s kind of what we’re doing all first semester is getting us ready and getting us funny, really.”
According to Peterson, the team kicks off with charity matches during SRT on Jan. 23 and 26 and will play its first competitive home match on Feb. 20.
“Considering that over half the team are returning veterans, I think we’re really, really ready as a team,” Peterson said.
As for the other part of the team, represented by new members such as Erickson, Peterson said there is still a little left to learn. As the season nears, Erickson said she is looking forward to the surprises.
“I’m really excited just to learn more about what it is that the team does,” Erickson said.
