A February 14 poll conducted by the National Science Foundation found that one in four Americans does not know that the Earth rotates around the sun. Arguably one of the simplest questions in science, clearly common knowledge, yet 25 percent of those surveyed couldn’t answer correctly. 10 questions were on the entire survey, and the average score was a 6.5.
Disturbing facts like this are one of the reasons I decided to begin writing this blog. Now, I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’m setting out to cure CHS and the nation of scientific illiteracy; I’m just attempting to spark some interest in science, or at the very least to provide an outlet for those who already have an interest in science to encounter recent studies and discoveries.
The other reason I decided on a regular science blog is, (on a slightly more positive note,) my own captivation with science. From an early age I’ve been intrigued by the natural world, acquiring a particular fascination with living things, and thought that this would be an ideal platform for me to convey that interest to readers. To me, the idea of advancing the scope of human understanding of the world is not only essential for our continued existence as a species, but also a primal instinct within all of us. To learn, to unveil the rules that govern our world, to improve our technology and medicine.
“Men love to wonder, and that is the seed of science.”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
