The state recently released a revised draft of standards for the math department. These new standards parallel the math department’s current curricular standards in many ways, but may induce minor tweaks and changes in the math department’s curricular layout and teaching methodology, according to math department chairperson Jacinda Sohalski. The standards are currently under review by the math department.
“It’s very important to give our input now while we have the chance,” Sohalski said.
The math department and all of Carmel Clay schools now have the opportunity to review the new standards and submit feedback to the school district. For the math department, only the preliminary stages of the review process are complete.According to Sohalski, “A lot of the teachers in the department have started looking at the standards related to some of their courses.”
Students are more or less oblivious to these reforms. While he himself was not informed of the curricular changes in math classes, David Liang, math independent study student and senior, said that he could see potential upsides to these modifications, particularly if they should allow for more individualized instruction.
“One thing that would definitely help…would be just getting fewer students per teacher,” Liang said.
