The second ranked women’s golf team will advance to the final day of the State finals at the Legends Golf Club Oct. 5. The team finished in second place out of 18 teams at the Regional on Sept. 28. This will be Carmel’s 24th appearance in the State finals since the program began in 1976, and also the 12th appearance out of 14 attempts by head coach Ken Kelly.
At the Regional, junior Maggie Rees led the team with a score of 74 and a third place finish overall. Seniors Mackenzie Curtis and Sophie Kelner finished in fifth and seventh places with scores of 75 and 79, respectively. For the Regional, Kelly said this is the first time that three team members have had scores in the 70’s.
Kelly said he was very proud of Rees and Curtis. “They were focused and played very well,” he said. Kelly also said this year’s Regional score, 311, was the best team score since coming to Smock Golf Course for the past three years.
In terms of preparation for State, Rees said that this week the team has been working more on chipping drills and making sure all parts of their game are tuned. “As a team, I know we can play well, because we did at the MIC and Sectionals,” Rees said.
