There will be an all-school convocation during SRT on Nov. 26 in the varsity gym, according to Principal John Williams. It will recognize the biggest achievements in sports and school organizations from this past fall. The convocation will take around 25 minutes.
“These convos are very important. If we talk about being a family and we talk about the traditions of Carmel High
School, then we need to come together as a family and celebrate those,” Williams said. “The folks who are a part of these programs whether it’s the volleyball team or cross-country team- they need to be recognized. We should never take these for granted. The fact that our girls’ cross-country team has won four or five years in a row doesn’t take away from what those girls did this year.”
Student body president Bobby Greaser said he agrees with Williams that the student body needs to take the time and recognize the big achievements of school groups.
“For a school as big as Carmel, we win so much that the achievements of these kids are almost underrated. So much goes on here and there are so many clubs and activities that do so many amazing things that sometimes, it just gets overlooked,” he said.
Williams said this year’s fall convocation has more groups to recognize than previous years. To make sure the convocations are not too long, the administration only recognizes group accomplishments rather than individual accomplishments.
“Our criteria that we use is when a group accomplishes something equivalent to a state-championship or runner-up,” he said. “We typically don’t recognize individuals, just teams, unless it’s something that we feel the school needs to hear about and this person needs to be recognized.”
According to Greaser, his role is to read a script and read off the names of people getting recognized.
“Henry Curts, the speaker of the House, and I look over the script and we’re just basically the directors of the ceremony along with Principal Williams. We read a lot of names,” he said.
Williams said that this tradition of having all-school convocations will continue for a long time.
“We should recognize for those folks, we should celebrate for our school, and we need to get together. Nothing replaces proximity,” he said.
