On March 16, the CHS Academic Competition Team (A.C.T.), formerly known as the Brain Game team, lost in a Brain Game match against North Central High School with a score of 35 to 25. According to A.C.T. Coach John Shearin, since Brain Game is single elimination, the team is now done competing for the rest of the school year.
“The team does three things: the MIC (Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference), which is one night, WRAL (White River Academic League), which we finished back a couple months ago, and Brain Game, which is single elimination,” Shearin said. Despite the loss, he said the team still performed well.
Sameer Leley, A.C.T. member and senior, said, “We excelled in the Minute Quiz, but we could have probably improved in being a little bit faster on the buzzer.”
Since Leley is a senior, he will be unable to be on the team again next year. He said he was sad that he could no longer compete with the team, especially because it ended with a loss. However, Shearin is looking forward to next year, as he will return as coach.
“I think that people should contribute to the overall school and community. I want to do something besides show up and be a librarian, and this is something that I enjoy tremendously,” Shearin said.
As for next year, Shearin wants any students who are interested in joining the team to try it out in the upcoming school year.
He said, “I encourage anyone interested should look for the callout meeting in the fall. Students should at least show up and take the preliminary test if they are interested.”
