On Sept. 19, the varsity men’s tennis team competed in the Metropolitan Scholastic Conference tournament and came out with a first place victory.
Carmel competed against North Central, Lawrence North, Terre Haute South, Terre Haute North, Center Grove, Ben Davis and Warren Central. The team came in first place by a margin of 23 points, as they won four out of the five divisions of play.
According to varsity tennis player and junior Chris Bertolini, Carmel won the draw for all the singles matches and won number-two doubles, but came up short in number-one doubles. “It definitely shows how deep Carmel is by proving how strong we are in all five divisions,” Bertolini said. “We won the MIC last year the same way, by winning four out of five.”
Head Coach Mike Bostic said he thought that the team really stepped up when it needed to. “I think this will provide us with some momentum heading into the Sectional,” Bostic said. “The MIC is the most difficult conference in the state and we won it convincingly. I look for us to be confident heading into tournament play.”
“It definitely builds up our confidence and sends a message to the other teams that Carmel is the team to beat this year,” Bertolini said. “We’re definitely excited to start Sectionals and go from there, and we’ve been working hard every practice. We’re just excited to play every match.”
