October is nationally renowned as “spooky season”, as everyone eagerly anticipates Halloween. This year, Halloween lands on a Thursday. A big part of Halloween is the candy that comes with it, but for the second year in a row, candy prices are up by 13% this month compared to last year. This is mostly due to heavy rainfall in West Africa, where most cocoa production takes place. The unsuitable weather caused limited production, bringing prices to an all-time high. 

In Carmel High School, the House of Representatives hosted a trick-or-treat event on October 26th at Riley Children’s Hospital. Students were encouraged to attend, and the event featured games, a haunted house, candy, and lots of fun.

Related to the spooky nature of the month, a new piece of repertoire by famous composer Frederic Chopin, was discovered nearly 200 years after it was written. Some found it ironic that it was uncovered in October as if his ghost returned to visit and give classical music enjoyers both a trick and a treat for the scary season.
