What was your first impression of American high school?   

I felt that there was more freedom in American schools  than in Japanese high schools.  I was surprised that the classes differ for each person and that there are no first-period classes, among other things.   

日本の高校より自由が多いなと感じました。えー、人によって受ける授業が異なっていて、えー、１時間目の授業がないなどあるのは驚きました。

How does the atmosphere of classes and classrooms in America differ from Japanese schools? 

アメリカの授業や教室の雰囲気は、日本の学校とどのように違いますか？

In Japanese schools, you are often not allowed to walk around freely during class or use your smartphone, but I learned that in America, you can do those things.  Japanese students often use trains to go to school and many are driven to the station by their parents. For lunch, bento is the mainstream, and few go to the school cafeteria. I thought these points are different in America.

What has particularly surprised you about American culture this week?

今週、アメリカの文化について特に驚いたことは何ですか？

I felt that there is more time spent with family compared to Japan. I was also  surprised that driving to school is something you do on your own, because in Japan, you only do that from university.  Also in Japan, at many schools, you aren’t allowed to just get up and walk around during class, nor are you allowed to use your smartphone; in the U.S., however, I realized that you actually can do those things. 

日本より家族との時間が多いなと思いました。自分で車を運転して学校に行くことは、日本では大学からなので、驚きました。日本の学校は、授業中に勝手に立ち歩いてはいけないし、スマホも触ってはいけない学校が多いが、アメリカはそれができることがわかった。

What has been the most meaningful or impressive experience so far?

今まで最も意味があったまたは印象的な経験は何ですか？

 (I think the most meaningful experience so far is) living together. Doing a homestay allows you to feel closer to the lives of American people, and being able to converse with friends of the host family lets you learn about various cultures, so I felt that this experience itself was very meaningful.  

一緒に住んだこと。ホームステイをすること自体がアメリカの人の生活を身近に感じら れるし、ホストファミリーの友達などともえ会話できて、いろんな文化を知れるので、この経験自体がすごく意味があると感じました。

How has your perspective on American high schools changed since coming here? 

アメリカの高校について、こちらに来てからどのような変化がありましたか？

Before coming here, I honestly thought there might be some discrimination, but I realized that the way of thinking is more advanced than in Japan, and I felt that Japan is a bit behind.

正直、こちらに来る前は差別があるかもしれないと思っていましたが、考え方が日本よりも進んでいると感じ、日本は少し遅れていると思いました。

If there is another opportunity, would you like to participate in another study abroad program? 

もしまた機会があれば、別の留学プログラムに参加してみたいですか？

I think so. I participated in this program and became more interested in cultures different from Japan, so if there is an opportunity to learn more about other cultures, I would definitely like to participate.

参加してみたいです。今回のプログラムに参加して、日本とは異なる文化にさらに興味を持つようになったので、他の文化についてもっと学ぶ機会があれば、ぜひ参加したいです。
