Was anything about the school or students you found to be surprising?
I was surprised by how big the school building is and I was also amazed by the papers and posters stuck on the walls of the classrooms and all over the school. I think it’s unique to America that the desks and chairs are attached. I also thought it was unusual that students move classrooms for each class, similar to a university.
What aspects about the school you found different from your school in Japan?
In Japan, in the library you have to be quiet and can’t eat anything, but here, I was surprised to see snacks being sold. Also, in Japan, we have earthquake evacuation drills, but I found it a bit scary that in America, there are drills for gun shootings.

How does American classroom culture differ from your school in Japan?
In Japan, the teacher teaches to about 30 or 40 students and just makes them solve problems, but in American classes, I think the difference is that students discuss and can learn about various specialized fields like psychology.
Have you noticed any differences in lunchtime or cafeteria food?
I was first surprised that there is lunchtime between classes. Also, in Japanese classes, each period is usually around forty-five to fifty minutes, but in America, it’s longer at ninety minutes, which I think is a difference.
What’s one thing about American culture that really stood out to you in your first week?

Americans seem to really love talking, and I also have the impression that they enjoy talking, dancing, and singing a lot. I thought it was good that the distance with friends was close and communication was taken regardless of gender. Americans like to joke, so it was hard to tell what was true and what was a lie.
Have you learned anything new about connecting with people of other cultures?
I think cultural differences can sometimes be felt, but on the other hand, I think it’s a good part of interaction that people from different cultures could laugh together and have lively conversations over one thing. So, I want to work harder on my English.
