The members of the Family, Career & Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) will begin to finalize their plans for their Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) event project during their next meeting on Nov. 7 in B175. According to FCCLA co-adviser Faith Dalton, the club’s leaders’ main priorities will be to help newcomers learn about the project they want to complete.
“We’re going to be finalizing our plans for what we’re doing and then put that into action,” Dalton said. “We don’t have to decide yet, that’ll be more December and January, but it’s better to get started early. Most (students) already at least have an idea of what they’re interested in doing as a project.”
Laynie Wade, senior and FCCLA state officer, said she enjoys providing advice to students who are considering fashion-adjacent projects.
“What I really like to do is share my past projects. It’s kind of hard for someone to do a project if they don’t know what it looks like, so it’s really fun explaining to new members what I did in the past and what the judges liked about the projects,” Wade said. “Freshman year is a good time to get a feel for the events and learn in your school classes, and then sophomore year is where we can really see all the skills coming together into a high quality product.”
In addition to the STAR event projects, Dalton said the members of the FCCLA are also thinking about starting a book drive.
“We’re planning to do a book drive for children who don’t have books or families who are struggling financially,” Dalton said. “Alternatively, we might also be sending (books) off to help with hurricane disaster relief, giving books to children and families which have been affected by the recent natural disasters.”
