The CCS school board met on Nov. 11 to recognize the Young Artist Award winners. Romana Rice, assistant director of CCS curriculum, instruction and assessment, said tradition only recognizes students once or twice a year.
“Each school in the CCS district nominates and recommends one of their students as the young artist,” Rice said. “Their beautiful artwork is in the public meeting room so everyone in the community is able to enjoy it.”
Many have noted the importance of encouraging the creativity and expression of young artists. Sophomore Gavin Goins, currently in Drawing II, said taking art classes has tapped into his creative side.
“Art allows people to express themselves and to build on their curiosity,” Goins said. “Programs like (the Young Artist Award) help students grow their passion for art.”
Art is beneficial not only to the artist, but also the audience. Rice said the community looks forward to their art displays.
“Community members always comment on how bare and dreary the walls are without the art,” Rice said. “This art can bring people together across the community.”
Since the value of art is undeniable, Goins said it’s important for artists to stay eager to produce new works.
“A lot of student artists can get stuck in a cycle of self doubt,” Goins said. “It’s essential to have a support system ready for them.”
