As a result of inclement weather, the debate team’s district meet at Brebeuf has been postponed to Feb. 11 and 12, Ivy Yan, team president and senior, said. The team is coming off two recent meets at Ben Davis and Plymouth. Coming off winter break, the team was a little shaky and the results mixed, but Yan said the team is well-prepared now.
“A lot of us were getting back into the swing of things,” Yan said via e-mail.
One of the issues at those two meets were attendance, team sponsor James Ziegler said. Both the meets had six attendees. Prior to that, the fewest number to participate in a meet was 16. For Ziegler, it was a revival of his first semester goal to constantly improve team participation, while taking into consideration how involved team members are in other things.
Despite the small attendance, one of the public forum teams placed second at Plymouth. Besides that, Ziegler said it was great for the members to get more practice in using this month’s two different resolutions.
“Even though (the varsity debaters) didn’t do as well as they hoped, from what I took from speaking with them, they have different arguments they’ve learned form,” Ziegler said.
The team now looks to participating in State at Kokomo on Feb. 4 and 5 before they move to districts. Ziegler said he’s confident that the team is prepared for its four Lincoln-Douglas and four public forum teams to have success.
He said, “The level of preparation going into districts should be there.” By Patrick Bryant <[email protected]>
