To increase school security and keep up with changing technology, a new security system called School Gate Guardian will be implemented in January.
According to Assistant Principal Doug Bird, all of the elementary and middle schools in Carmel Clay already have School Gate Guardian, and the high school is the last building to install the system.
School Gate Guardian is an electronic system that will be placed at the three main entrances to the school. According to Bird, at the school’s main entrance a visitor will have to walk through the double doors into the main office. There, they will have to scan their drivers’ license and the system will run a background check on the individual. Then, the computer will print a nametag with a picture of the visitor.
“I think it’ll significantly make it safer for staff and students,” Bird said.
However, some students see School Gate Guardian as a bit of a hassle.
“It’s good because it will make the school safer, but it might make it unnecessarily harder to visit the school,” senior Jacob Hook said.
