On May 5, the Academic Superbowl math squad and fine arts squad competed in the State competition and earned third place and sixth place, respectively.
“Carmel High School, based upon our regional scores, was listed in the top ten spots for the second time in three years.,” sponsor Matt Dillon said. “We had the fine arts team qualify for State, as well as the math team. We got third in the state in math, which is fantastic. I think that matches the best I’ve ever done.”
Dillon, who said he will return next year as a coach, had only words of praise for his students. Just a few weeks ago, Dillon had remarked that he would “keep an eye out for Jeff (Hou)” during the State competition. According to Dillon, Hou has performed remarkably well this season. As expected, Hou performed well at State, earning a plaque for “a very satisfied sponsor.”
“In terms of improvement , where do you go from there? All you can do is go up,” Dillon said. “They’re not getting a grade for this; this is their personal time outside of school. I think the kids were enthusiastic, and they had a good time. And that’s all that I could ever ask for.”
Science squad captain Rushvi Desai said she is disappointed that her team was not able to compete in the State competition, but also said she is proud of her fellow teammates’ contributions.
“First of all, going to State is prestigious, just as it is in any other academic competition or sport,” Desai said. “Also, there’s nothing wrong with bringing another trophy back to Carmel.”
Next year’s topic of study will focus on Greece and Grecian themes of study. Dillon said he is looking forward to another season of competition.
“Of course, I would love to put on my resume, ‘The coach of a state champion.’ But that was never what it was about,” Dillon said. “I just like us being a competitor each and every year, representing Carmel. But, there’s always next year.”A
