The club Students for Education may be ending soon as a result of the administration’s concern for the safety of the students.
The club held its call-out meeting in August as usual, but the club has not conducted any meetings since. According to Nailah Khatri, club president and senior, the administration is concerned about the safety of the club members.
In prior years, the club would travel downtown to homeless shelters to tutor children and help them with their homework. Last year, the club tutored at Coburn Place, a homeless shelter in Indianapolis for women who have suffered from domestic violence. “These kids have gone through so much, and it’s not even hard to just pay attention to them and make them feel important, and it’s just feels good,” Khatri said. “Like, every time when you come back, you feel good because you’ve done these really great things for kids who need it.”
Former club sponsor Sherri Pankratz, who resigned this year, said that last year the administration determined it was not comfortable with a club that went downtown to homeless shelters without staff supervision. “I understand safety issues, you don’t ever want to have kids unsupervised…but I think that we should look for staff members who are interested and have the time to go down and take part in that,” Pankratz said. According to Nailah, the club was unable to find any staff members willing to stay after school with them and travel downtown regularly.
However, Pankratz said the club members were not willing to go down without a fight. According to Khatri, the students made a video of club members saying why they thought the club was a good opportunity for students and should remain a club at CHS. Although it has not yet been completed, officers plan to send it to the administration members who are most concerned with their safety.
Khatri said there are other ways for the club to help the children at the shelter, through fundraisers and donations. Although she also said the club wouldn’t be the same without active participation at the homeless shelter.
As for the future of Students for Education, both Khatri and Pankratz say they do not know.
