Academic Superbowl head coach Matt Dillon and assistant coach James Ziegler have officially selected this year’s respective subject squad captains. For the 2012-2013 Academic Superbowl Team, the captains are: Chelsea Yedinak, English captain, Victor Xu, fine arts captain, Abi Regiman, social studies captain, Sharmila Paul, math captain, Rushvi Desai, science captain, and Aining Wang. These captains will be responsible for the delegation of authority as well as ensuring that their subject squad learns the material and perform well at State.
“They plan out and organize how the teams prepare for the actual competition. We give them as much support as we can, but they’re the ones who do all the work and master the information,” Dillon said.
In the competition, the role of the captains is equally as important as in practices. The captains have the “final say” in regards to answering the questions.
“You may get two out of the three seated at the table that don’t agree,” Dillon said. “The captain is the deciding vote; the ‘buck’ basically stops with the captain.”
Though the major positions have already been chosen, the club has only just begun studying the material.
“Overall, we just practice basic trivia for our particular subject. This year, our topic is Ancient Greece; so we study about various things in that time period,” Katie Doman, Academic Superbowl participant and sophomore, said.
Dillon said he also recommends that students begin going through the information, but they should try to split up the material into “digestible” pieces.
“Divide it into little goals, that you can actually reach, and do it in a method that is fun for everyone,” Dillon said. “No one wants to show up and be lectured. Make it a game, make something fun out of it, and enjoy.”
