As the end of the school year quickly nears, the nurses in the health center have already started to wrap up the clinic and prepare for the upcoming school year. According to nurse coordinator Patty Antle, the health center is informing parents about what paperwork they should fill out for next year.
Antle said, “We are letting parents know about the paperwork for different health conditions and immunizations that we need in order to prepare for the next school year. We also need to return some medicine back to whomever they belong to here.”
In addition to the load of paperwork, the nurses have to order supplies and clean up the clinic for next year as well. However, the student assistants have been a helping hand, according to Antle. Although their jobs may seem trivial, their simple tasks—running errands, making ice packs and stocking supplies—are critical to keeping the health center in top condition.
One of these student assistants is senior Rachel Weiss. According to Weiss, the health center is usually placid and peaceful.
Weiss said, “We usually don’t get a lot of students in the morning and the nurses don’t really have much for us to do. Since the nurses don’t need us all the time, we’re usually doing homework for the majority of the period.”
Despite the benefits of being a student assistant, there is another small incentive and motivation to be a part of this class, according to Weiss.
Weiss said, “With everything the nurses do for all of us, this is a great chance to return the favor and help them for a change.”
