According to Science Bowl sponsor Virginia Kundrat, Science Bowl will be competing in their first competition on March 8 at IUPUI. CHS will have three teams with a total of 15 students competing in the Regional competition.
At Regionals, the Science Bowl teams will compete in a round robin in the morning that will determine the bracket organization for the afternoon competitions. The afternoon competitions are double elimination with the top team moving on to Nationals in Washington D.C.
Science Bowl members met and competed against each other during the past week for the first time; however, Kundrat said that they have yet to schedule another competition between all the individual teams.
“(Competitions between the teams) are good practice for them to work together as a team and work against another team. We’d like to have another one of these meetings before the competition but I don’t know. We’re waiting to see because getting schedules to coordinate is a problem,” Kundrat said.
According to Darren Chang, Science Bowl member and freshman, individual teams will continue to meet by themselves during the days leading up to Regionals.
“I’m still just trying to read as many interesting science books as I can and I use Wikipedia a lot. I might look up stuff on Google to prepare me too. My team is also practicing sample questions from tests from past years,” Chang said.
Both Chang and Kundrat said that they feel that this year’s Science Bowl team has a good chance of making it to Nationals.
Chang said, “We’re prepared because we know our team very well. We know how we’re going to collaborate during the bonus questions. We know the order that we answer in, and we know what questions we can answer.”
