As its season moves forward, the men’s varsity soccer team looks to continue developing and finding success on Friday as it travels to Fort Wayne for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff against Fort Wayne Canterbury.
“This is a big game,” Shane Schmidt, head coach of men’s varsity team, said. “We play them every year in the regular season and we used to see them in Semistate quite often as well. Also, they are the defending 1A State champions and we tied them last year.”
David Capone, team captain and senior, said that the game should serve as a great learning experience for the team.
“They are one of the best teams in the state and it will be a good test of how good we are in comparison to some of the other good teams out there. They have been very good the last few years and they should give us a really good game,” Capone said.
However, the team has aquired a few minor setbacks leading up to this game. According to Capone, injuries have been coming and going.
“I myself am trying to recover from a knee injury from a couple weeks ago,” Capone said. “David Liang (central defender and junior) recently suffered a concussion and broken wrist two games ago against Zionsville.”
To Schmidt, however, the team is more than equipped to handle these injuries.
“I think that the guys will respond well,” Schmidt said. “We have a bunch of well rounded and versatile players. Someone will step up and do well. That is what being a team is all about.”
