The Carmel Clay Public Library (CCPL) will celebrate Teen Read Week, which will take place Oct. 18 to Oct. 24, through various activities targeting high school students.
“(The purpose of Teen Read Week is) to remind teens, parents, educators and everyone that reading for fun is important,” Young Adult Services Manager Hope Baugh said.
On Oct. 14, the YA department will host Read Beyond Reality Pictionary from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Students can test their science fiction and fantasy knowledge through a game of Pictionary to celebrate the theme of this year’s Teen Read Week, “Read Beyond Reality.” The winner will receive a $15 iTunes gift card.
On Oct. 24 from 2 to 4 p.m., students can also play a trivia game called Book Complexity (based off the game Cineplexity) which will involve naming book titles.
Both games will be played in the YA lounge, and no registration or fee is needed.
Junior Yusheng Zhu said he may check out these activities. He said although there can be a time crunch, teens should still read whenever possible.
“Teens should read more because reading stimulates the brain and lets them relax outside of the classroom,” Zhu said. “I am now taking up reading for pleasure again, so that’s how I’m participating.”
Baugh said, “Teens have many options for entertainment, so it’s important to remind them to spend time reading for pleasure. It’s free, fun and can be done just about anywhere.” By Rebecca Xu <[email protected]>
