The school board decided last week against redistricting for the upcoming school year. Patricia Hackett, vice president of the school board, said, “No redistricting is foreseen to be necessary for the 2010-2011 school year. The school board has appointed a School Board Advisory Committee made up of approximately eight parents to study both the criteria and the process that could be utilized when redistricting does become a reality. This committee will build upon community input.”
While Hackett said only a few elementary buildings are near or at capacity currently, Senior Abisola “Abi” Ibrahim said she wishes it was not so crowded at this school.
“My younger sister goes to Prairie Trace and I have never heard my parents worry about her school being too large, although they complain pretty often about how large (Carmel High School) is.”
Hackett notes that redistricting and school size is important to many families. ”
The process of redistricting is, naturally, a process near and dear to many families. Part of what makes the Carmel Clay educational system successful is the fact that families prioritize the education of their children and are vested in their home school,” Hackett said.
Ibrahim said she loves the size of Carmel, but understands her parents’ concerns about its growth. “(My parents) are mostly worried about how large the high school will be once Moji, my sister, is old enough to come here. I like how big (the high school) is right now, but I’m glad this is the largest I will ever have to experience it.” By Rosemary Boeglin <[email protected]>
