The board advisory committee came together in October in order to devise a method for future redistricting by researching methods used by other schools and speaking with present elementary school principals according to Tricia Hackett, vice president of the Carmel Clay School Board.
Senior Derya Toksoy, who was redistricted from Carmel Middle School to Creekside Middle School, said she thinks getting community input on the issue of redistricting will be beneficial in the long-run.
“I know when I was redistricted by parents were okay with it because we lived closer to Creekside than Carmel (Middle School), but I also had a lot of friends that lived closer to Carmel that were annoyed with a longer commute to school. In either situation it’s a good idea to get information from the community so that the school board can make the most educated decision,” Toksoy said.
Hackett said that because the situation now is different than it will be when redistricting does come about, in terms of priorities, voters will now be more flexible in reactions. Although she said input from the community will be important, decision making lies with the Carmel Clay School System.
Members of the community will have access to an online survey that the board advisory committee will create, according to Hackett.
President of the school board Andrew Klein said “The survey will serve us very well as we go forward with the anticipation of redistricting.” By Rosemary Boeglin <[email protected]>
