On March 12, 13 and 20, Key Club members can help the PTOs of several elementary schools put on spring carnivals for students. They can also collect toiletries, canned goods and other necessity items throughout the semester to be donated to needy families by the Lutheran Family Services.
According to Morgan Perry, club president and junior, Town Meadow elementary school will have its spring carnival on March 12 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Cherry Tree and College Wood elementary schools will have their carnivals on March 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Carnivals at Mohawk Trails and Woodbrook elementary schools will occur March 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Key Club members will help set up equipment and tables for the carnivals, supervise the various games and help clean up the area once the event has finished, according to co-sponsor Katie Gray.
In addition, Key Club has joined with the Lutheran Family Services in an ongoing project to distribute needed items to poor families in the Indianapolis area. According to Gray, students will receive 15 minutes of group service for every two items they bring in.
Perry said the Lutheran Family Services distributes essential items, like socks, underwear, canned food and toiletries, to people who can’t afford them. Currently, however, its supplies are running low, and the organization has asked Key Club to help it support poor families.
“A lot of times, these families have young kids, and so they can’t afford things as simple as deodorant or shampoo for each of them,” Gray said. By Thalib Razi <[email protected]>
