On Feb. 22, Science Olympiad competed in the annual Regional Competition.
“We did very well,” Cynthia Henry, club head sponsor and chemistry teacher, said. “We came in first place.”
The team received the lowest score at the competition with West Lafayette and Park Tudor trailing not too far behind. All three teams are expected to compete in the State competition held at Indiana University in Bloomington on March 22. Schools all over Indiana have participated in the six or seven other Regional competitions, and those teams will also participate in the State competition.
15 members are expected to perform at the State competition instead of the two teams of 15 members that got to participate at the Regional competition. Other members are also expected to come along to participate in trial events.
Fran Rushing, co-head sponsor and natural sciences teacher, said, “They have what they call trial events that they run at the State (and) at National level which are events that people are essentially trying to test out.”
Last year the team did not have great luck at the State competition.
“Last year at State we had some issues,” Henry said. “We did not realize we’d have to carry our equipment across the Bloomington campus.”
This year the team is better prepared and organized and expect to perform well at State.
“We have a really, really talented team,” club president and senior Patrick Tan said. “I expect nothing less than the best.”
