The soccer team continues to exceed throughout the season as it prepares for its Pack the House Night on Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. The Greyhounds will face Ft. Wayne Canterbury, a team looking to blow Carmel away for the second year in a row.
Ft. Wayne Canterbury defeated Carmel last year 3-1 and earned the number two spot in the 1A poll for this year.
Head Coach Shane Schmidt said via email, “For a small school, they have a rich tradition as we do too. They have won two or three State championships, beating us in the 1997 state finals.”
Sam Young, varsity soccer player and senior said, “It’s always a huge game and the team is usually pretty good.”
For such a big and important game, the team hopes for many fans in the stands to cheer them on to victory.
Schmidt said, “I hope to have a great atmosphere for the game. The football team is on the road to Terre Haute South, I believe, so it would be great to have a big crowd at the game.”
Schmidt and Young aren’t the only ones excited for this occasion. Students as well are going all out to support the soccer team.
According to Wild Bunch officer Allie McCan, “We’re going to have enough fans to go all the way to the back of the bleachers. The house will be packed.”
Along with playing such a big game come jitters for the players. Each player deals with the hype in a different way. Some players get completely zoned out and use the yelling to help their game. Others let the yelling control the way they play.
Young said, “Initially I feel really nervous, but you get pumped after you see the crowd.”
