Continuing forward into the season, the men’s varsity soccer team looks to continue its success when they travel to North Central on Sept. 12 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
“It is a big game on two different levels,” Head Coach Shane Schmidt said. “It is a MIC (Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference) game, and it is vital to achieving one of our goals of being conference champions. Also, in my opinion this is one of the best rivalries in all of high school sports in the state of Indiana.”
David Capone, team captain and senior, said the team is making sure not to take its opponent lightly.
“They (North Central) are one of our biggest rivals all season,” Capone said. “They always have a very good team and a legitimate shot at the State championship every year. Every game is extremely competitive and usually showcases two of the top teams in high school soccer.”
According to Schmidt, the rivalry between the two schools has been evident well before the player’s began high school.
“In 14 out of 15 years that I have been here, either North Central or Carmel has won or shared the conference championship,” Schmidt said. “We played them in the State championship game in 2005, and every game is a hard fought, exciting contest.”
