Shameem Zia, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Club (FCCLA) former secretary and junior, said she is excited about the Bicycle Safety Clinic hosted by Clarian North Hospital. This event is in conjunction with the hospital’s health fair and is scheduled to take place on Oct. 10.
“I am looking forward to working with the kids at the Bike Safety event mainly because it’s really important for them to understand how to be careful when riding their bikes,” Zia said.
FCCLA sponsor Brooke Weekes said the club members will help children learn how to safely ride bicycles, set up the bike course and hand out certificates to the children showing they have received a ‘license’ to ride their bicycles.
Weekes said FCCLA members will teach the children safety measures such as how to secure helmets. According to statistics from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there is an average of 107 bicyclists killed and 12,000 bicyclists injured each year who are 15 years of age and under.
“With so many children affected by bike accidents, I think this event can really help make a difference,” Zia said.
Weekes said she believed this event will not only help children learn how to ride their bikes safely, but it will also get FCCLA members active in community service. “This is a great opportunity for students to have an active role to be like mentors to younger children. I think they will both gain something from this event.” By Erum Rizvi <[email protected]>
