Last week, the school installed buzzers on Doors 2, 4 and 13, which are the main office, student service and freshman center doors respectively. In the new system, every door will be locked at school during the school day, and visitors must provide verbal or visual identification through the “doorbell” system before entering the room.
Originally, administrators planned to implement the system during the 2013-2014 school year. According to Principal John Williams, however, administrators decided to install the technology and begin the new procedure starting April 15.
Officer Phil Hobson, who manages school security, said, “We’re not paranoid. We have sprinklers, drills, smoke alarms. We’re prepared for fires and disasters. We have the same responsibility with school security.”
Williams added that administrators are looking to address recent issues with misuse of the intercom, which all students and teachers are able to access through school phones. Current initiatives include a “kill-switch” that would shut off the intercom in the case of an unauthorized message or a more complex code-entry system on phones.
“If we have an emergency we want to have everyone know,” he said. “We’re working (the current issues) out with the vendors (of the intercom equipment).”
