The varsity men’s basketball season opened on Nov. 24 with an 84-71 win against Brownsburg. After starting off strong, the team has won three more games and lost five.
Big Game sponsor Dale Herr said, “After the incident last year, we as a school seem to still have this thirst to prove ourselves. Our record is close, so I don’t think anyone has given up hope yet of doing that.”
“After starting off win a win, then lose, then win, then lose pattern going on, it’s kind of hard to tell how this season is going to go, but that’s just how it goes sometimes,” Zane Anderson, Big Game president and senior, said. “With some Big Game support, I think we could still pull it out for this year.”
The most recent 38-41 loss to Center Grove last Friday may have rattled some confidence, however.
“Center Grove is a decently sized rival for us, so losing to them was a bummer,” Herr said. “But they’re not our only rival, and one loss doesn’t mean we’ll lose to everyone else. It’s just one game, and a loss can be just one loss.”
With 11 regular season varsity men’s basketball games left in the season, along with up to seven championship games, there is plenty of opportunity to overturn the current 4-5 record.
“There are so many more games, and we can’t give up on the team. I think the team will need everyone, including Big Game, to keep faith just as much as the team itself,” Herr said. “This isn’t the end of the season or the team.”
The next varsity men’s basketball game is scheduled for Jan. 12 against Cathedral at the Eric Clark Activity Center. By Mackenzie Blake
