House will host the annual basketball tailgate on Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. in the freshman cafeteria. According to House sponsor Sarah Wolff, cabinet members will be selling tickets for $5 throughout the next week.
“There will be traditional tailgating games. Last year they did volleyball in the freshman cafeteria, and they’ll have music again,” Wolff said. “It’s a tailgating environment but inside, and it’s a good way to bring more people to the home basketball games. That was our objective. In student government we try to support other groups in the school. That’s how it started, and after that we just kept going because it was fun and a good cause, and a lot of people showed up.”
Cabinet member and senior Matt Wehner is one of the chairs for the event and said a lot of work has gone into planning for the tailgate in order to raise money for Riley Children’s Hospital.
“My favorite part of the tailgate is getting to see lots of faces from school and getting kids excited for the basketball game,” Wehner said. “This is my chair event which means there are three or four people who are in charge of the event. We’ve planned games, surprises and of course there will be pizza.”
Wolff said that they started the tailgate to support the basketball team.
“We feel like the football team gets so much support and we started this event when the basketball team was going through a hard time,” Wolff said. “They didn’t have a lot of support due to some bad press release that was going on in the community. We decided to pair with them to get their attendance up at games. People really enjoyed something to do before the game when the weather is bad and you can’t go outside and tailgate. It’s a fun tailgating atmosphere with music, games and food.”
