Throughout my entire reading career, I’ve never really reached for a mystery book. I typically prefer the comfort of a good romance book, but upon reading And Then There Were None, this habit will certainly change.

Agatha Christie supplies an interesting premise in the novel, with 10 strangers lured to a secluded island by an unknown, and seemingly absent, host. Upon their arrival, each of the guests are murdered one by one, mirroring the chilling nursery rhyme “Ten Little Soldier Boys.” As more and more of the guests fall dead, the group realizes the murderer must be among them, leading to paranoia and a shocking ending as the murderer, and their intentions, are revealed. 

It initially took me some time to get into the book as the narration shifts focus among characters, but as the plot thickened and the stakes heightened, I became wholeheartedly invested in this novel. The final chapter of the book, written from the murderer’s perspective about their course of action, was incredibly disturbing but tied the story together perfectly.

I’d never read an Agatha Christie novel before this, but I may just have to dive deeper into her works. I’d recommend And Then There Were None to anyone who needs a good, quick read and wants to dip their toes into the mystery genre.
