How did you get into photography?
I first got into photography my junior year when I performed in Kodachrome, a play. I played a dead photographer, and really found a passion for photography through that show.
How would you describe your style of photography?
My style is a bit all over the place. I mainly do portrait photography, and really love to get creative with my concepts. I like to base my shoots off songs, and let the music inform my photos. Sometimes my art leans towards a brighter, more colorful style, sometimes it’s darker. I’m still trying to figure out my main style.
What types of photos do you take?
I take portrait photos. So, creative shoots, senior pictures, and studio photos.
Why did you decide to start a photography business?
I originally didn’t charge for my photoshoots. I just enjoyed making art and wanted to gain experience. I eventually decided to start charging money because photography is very hard and takes a lot of time. If I want to keep developing my skills and upgrading my gear, I felt like I needed to make some kind of revenue.
What is your favorite photoshoot you’ve done?
My favorite photoshoot that I’ve done was with Lexie Vahrenkamp over the summer. We went to Morse Reservoir in Noblesville to take photos by the water. The sunset was just so stunning that evening. We wanted a bit of a Stevie Nicks vibe, and she was the absolutely perfect model for the job.
What obstacles or hardships have you had to overcome through your photography journey?
My biggest obstacle is probably comparing my work to that of other photographs around me or online. I’ve just had to learn that everyone’s journey is different, and the only thing that matters is if I like my work or not.
Who has been supporting you throughout your photography journey?
My friends have been my biggest supporters. They’ve shown a lot of interest in doing photoshoots with me which has helped me grow. They also say really kind things about my work that just makes me want to keep developing my skills. They’re the best. My good friend, Jack McNally, has been especially helpful throughout this process. He’s been my assistant in a lot of my photoshoots and helps give me ideas or just is there to assist me whenever possible. I really appreciate him.
Do you have any photographers you look up to as a role model or as inspiration?
I really look up to two of my friends who graduated high school last year. Paige Murray and Kathleen Williams have taught me a lot, and I aspire to be as creative as they are.
Do you plan to pursue photography in the future?
I hope to continue growing my own little business, though I don’t plan on studying photography professionally. My greatest passion is teaching, but I still want to keep being a photographer on the side.
What has been your most impactful experience throughout your high school photography journey?
The most impactful experience I’ve had so far is being invited to take photos of Carmel Choir’s annual Princess Academy. It was the first event I was invited to as a photographer, and it was just a great honor to capture such a magical day for all those kids.
What advice do you have for any high schoolers also wanting to get into photography?
The greatest advice I have is to just pick up a camera and start taking photos of everything you see. Even if it’s just on your phone. Start looking at the world with a desire to create, and then all of the tools will fall right into your lap. Seek out people to take photos with, go to places that would be cool to photograph, just go out of your way to create those opportunities for yourself. The rest will come with time.
How can people contact you if they want a photoshoot?
If people want a photoshoot, they should follow my photography instagram account: @emma.the.photographer_ , and then send me a DM.
Do you have anything else you want to add?
Jack McNally and Monroe Melton have been working super hard to develop their photography skills, too. They are amazing and everyone should check them out!!
