What is a classic?
The question of what constitutes classic literature is one that has shaped many, many scholarly discussions, thus for the sake of this review, I will define it as I see it. I want to preface this by saying this is not a comprehensive list of books I think will be or should be modern classics, but instead encapsulate a few pieces of literature that are meaningful and transcend time. In my view, a classic is any artform that stands the test of time, that is applicable and endures in meaning and in culture throughout the ages, but also engages and interacts with the idea of the human condition and invites future reflection. I know that this is a very loose definition of what a classic is, but it is one that lends itself to the greatest breadth of interpretation, allowing for works across different contexts, styles and periods to be considered within the same conversation.
The Kite Runner weaves personal guilt into the fabric of political upheaval. Hosseini’s narrative endures because it refuses easy redemption, instead examining memory, betrayal and the enduring weight of past choices. It is a story that resonates across cultures, grounded in specificity yet universally human in its emotional reach. Its widespread readership, educational presence and lasting emotional impact have secured its place as a modern classic.
