Christkindlmarkt will host the annual Glühwein Gallop 5K run/walk on Dec. 20, according to Christkindlmarkt. Named after the German “Glühwein” (glowing wine) served at the market, the Glühwein Gallop is characterized by its celebration of German culture and shared community enjoyment of the holidays.
Senior and German IV student Kameron Johnson said community events commemorating cultures present in Carmel is pivotal in upholding a standard of inclusion.
He said, “Our community in Indiana especially is surrounded by German immigrants, so there’s a lot of people who still have a large amount of German culture connected with them. Obviously it’s a minority in our community, but I still think it’s important to acknowledge the history of Indiana and how much these different people have done through our culture, as acknowledging these other minorities helps bring us together as a community. I think (the Glühwein Gallop) is a great way to introduce people to German culture and to new foods, and different people, and all these amazing things.”
Johnson is not alone in his appreciation for community cultural events. Pembroke Observer’s studies indicate 68% of people interviewed consider arts and cultural events to be very important aspects of being integrated in a community, and 72% believe these events build social cohesion and provide shared experiences.
Cross Country Coach Scott Williams said running events is a great way for normal people to get active with their friends and family.
“It’s interesting because this stuff has evolved over time,” he said. “You’ll get people who are from out of town to come to town, who are staying with family and want to go run something like this. You’ll get all types of people, like parents will bring kids in strollers. And things like this have become real big community events, especially on holidays. They’ll just go run and then usually there’s activities and stuff afterwards. It used to be like 5K’s and things would be for the serious runner, and now there’s like a few serious people but it’s normally just people that just want to run and have fun.”

Sophomore Christine Williams said her experience running a 5K for Creekside Middle School was challenging, however adversity shared among friends strengthens existing bonds.
She said, “(Running the 5K) connected me to the community because, at Creekside, we all had to do the 5K, so we all had that same hard experience and we all felt those emotions. I think it gives people a sense of belonging when they find other people who have similar interests like running.”
Johnson also said, “I think running by itself is a team activity, because anytime you run, it’s always more fun to run with other people. Often when people run, they talk about culture or other ideas and I think it just makes people closer together. I think running just helps push that idea of discussing things with people further than just a simple event without it.
Aside from community benefits, Runner’s World details more ways in which running 5K’s can be beneficial, such as fitness and charity. According to studies, regular 5K training strengthens the heart, making it more efficient at pumping oxygenated blood and improving overall circulation. Not only this, but entry fees and sponsorships often directly fund charity organizations.
Scott Williams said, “They definitely help the physical health part. You just feel better. Think of when you don’t feel like doing something and then you actually go do it- you just feel better afterwards. They also often benefit financially. Now it might be like $40 or $50 and you know the money is going to some charitable contribution.”
According to Carmel residents, cultural 5Ks are an amazing way to incorporate culture and health.
Johnson said, “I think there’s actually a large amount of people in Indiana who don’t even know how much German culture there is in Indiana, and I think especially Christkindlmarkt and other events such as that are really bringing that to light, and so people are really starting to see all of these different types of cultures that they didn’t even know were here. I think it’s a great way to spread these ideas and just have people see things that they don’t normally think of and see in the community.”
