For the first time since 1977, Carmel can call itself a basketball champion.
The Greyhounds defeated the Pike Red Devils 80-67 to win the Class 4A state championship. It was a game in which the team lead the entire time.
Benjamin “Ben” Gardner, guard and senior, finished with 31 points, breaking the IHSAA record for scoring in a Class 4A title game. Greg Oden (Lawrence North ’06) was the previous record holder with 29 points.
Samuel “Sam” Curts, shooting guard and senior, was the IHSAA Mental Attitude award-winner for Class 4A.
Carmel finished the season with a record of 23-4, which included victories over top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern in the Sectional 8 championship and nationally-ranked North Central on Dec. 16 during the regular season.
